Pool pumps

Pool pumps are vitally important to the function of the technical installation. You could therefore describe them as the heart of the swimming pool. The choice of filter pump for your pool is very important, and we will assist you.

Before choosing your pool pump, you should take into account both the volume of your pool and the capacity of your pool filter. We can provide very specific advice for our Triton filters from Pentair. For other filters, we can only offer guidelines.

How does a swimming pool filter pump work?

A swimming pool filter installation won’t work if you don’t have a pool pump; you need both the sand filter and the pump to make sure your pool water stays crystal clear.

The swimming pool pump pumps the water from the pool to the swimming pool filter. The surface water goes to the sand filter via the skimmer or overflow. The pump also takes the water to the sand filter via the pool vacuum cleaner.

If you have a skimmer pool, then the skimmer system will most likely have a pre-filter or filter basket. This can intercept the larger debris first. You should definitely also use the NET Skim pre-filter collection bags to catch all bigger debris (twigs, leaves, insects, etc.) so that it doesn’t reach the sand filter, prolonging the filter’s lifespan.

Once the water gets to the pool sand filter, it is pumped through the sand filter from top to bottom. This filter is filled with a filtration medium, such as sand or glass.

The water rests on top of the sand and seeps down through it. The dirt particles stick to the sand and fresh clear water comes out of the pool filter. This water is then sent to the pool.

How long should your filter pool pump run?

When and for how long should the filter pump be on? The answer depends on your installation and the dirt and debris in the pool. Those who use their pool daily in the summer will have to filter more than those who only use their pool at weekends.

During the summer period, in real summer weather, we recommend running the filter pump 24 hours a day. This keeps the water clear and algae hardly get a chance to grow. Although in this case you will have to check the chlorine and pH values sufficiently.

In the off-season, it is sufficient to filter the entire volume of the pool twice a day. Do you have an installation that can filter the entire pool in four hours? Then you can run the filter once during the day and once at night for four hours. How long your pool pump should run depends on the capacity of your filter installation.

Does filtering twice every 24 hours not seem sufficient to keep the water clear? Then run the filter pump more often, for example 4 times every 24 hours.

How often the pool pump should be on can be a bit “hit and miss” initially. But once you’ve found the right frequency, you know precisely when to turn on the pump.

How long should your filter pool pump run?

Which filter pump should I choose?

One option is to follow this table to choose the right filter pump for your pool:

Volume of pool 90-120 m³ 75-90 m³ 60-75 m³ 40-60 m³ 30-40 m³

Using this logic, your pool pump will be able to send all the pool water through the filter in 4 to 5 hours. However, you should also make sure that the filter is sufficiently capable of processing that flow. A pool pump that can process 20 m³ per hour needs a filter that can also process about 20 m³ per hour.

A 90/20 filter pump can be used for our Triton TR100 filter, but this pump is too powerful for smaller models. We also recommend installing 3 inlets to ensure that the water circulates properly. If you do not have a Triton filter, you can use these for pools between 90 m³ and 120 m³.

The Speck 90/15 pump is recommended for a pool with a TR60 sand filter. This is not an option for the TR 100 because there is otherwise too little suction on the skimmers and too little pressure at the inlets. If you do not have a Triton sand filter, you can use these pumps for pools between 75 m³ and 90 m³.

It is better not to use a type 90/13 Speck pool filter pump with one of our Triton filters as it is too powerful for the TR40 and all the conditions (e.g. length to the pool etc.) must be ideal for the TR60. However, this pool pump can be used for other filters in pools of between 60 and 75 m³.

The same applies to the 90/11 pool pump as for the 90/13. Too powerful for the TR40 and too weak for the TR60. Nevertheless, it can sometimes be advisable to use this pool pump with a TR40. For example, if the distance to the technical installation is fairly long, or if you have 3 suction points in your pool (e.g. 2 skimmers and 1 bottom drain). In addition, you can also use this pool pump in pools of between 40 and 60 m³ and with a filter that can process around 10 m³ per hour.

A 90/7 Speck pool pump is suitable for the TR40 sand filter. You can also use this pool pump with other filters for pools of up to 40 m³ and with a filter capacity of at least 7 m³ per hour.
