Cuba Libre

Cuba libre is a classic Caribbean cocktail. Ideally suited if you find simple Bacardi & Coke too plain.

The cocktail recipe originated during the Spanish-American war, with the literal translation meaning free (independent) Cuba.

In Cuba, the drink is therefore still served in honour of the American liberation of Cuba.

Cuba Libre

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml of white rum (for a genuine Cuba Libre, this should be the white Cuban rum from Havana Club)
  • Coca Cola
  • 5 ml of lime juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Straw

How to prepare:

  1. Put 4 - 6 ice cubes in a long drink glass. That's a tall, narrow glass.
  2. Pour 60 ml of Cuban rum over the ice cubes into the glass
  3. Fill the rest of the glass with Coca Cola
  4. Finally, add some lime juice and stir with a straw
  5. And maybe garnish with a slice of lime

Mojito

The Mojito is a refreshing and summery cocktail.

The cocktail recipe comes from Cuba and must therefore contain genuine Cuban rum, of course!

Mojito

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml of rum (Havana Club)
  • Lime or 15 ml of lime juice
  • Cane sugar
  • Mint
  • Ice cubes
  • Soda water

How to prepare:

  1. Cut a lime in half and pour the juice into a tall, narrow glass. The other half of the lime can be put in the glass as it is or squeezed and added as lime juice (15 ml) later.
  2. Then add 3 teaspoons of cane sugar and 4 sprigs of mint
  3. Crush everything carefully in the glass (leave the mint leaves whole). It is best to use a muddler for this. This is a type of pestle for crushing ice, herbs and fruit
Extra: For the best result, it is advisable to leave the mixed contents in the fridge for a few hours.
  4. Then fill the glass with (crushed) ice cubes and add the rum.
  5. Stir well using a bar spoon (long, narrow spoon) or simply a straw
  6. Finally, fill the rest of the glass with soda water
  7. Garnish with a few mint leaves

Variation:

  • For a sweeter Mojito, you can replace the soda water with 7UP or Sprite
  • For a Mojito with a delicious vanilla flavour, you can add 30 ml of rum (Havana Club) and 30 ml of Spiced Rum (e.g. Captain Morgan) in step 6
